The essential ideaAssess identity, Irish licensing information, clear terms and complaint routes. No rankings, endorsements or guarantees of financial safety.

Start with the business behind the brand

A polished website is not evidence of accountability. Identify the legal entity providing the service, the domain covered by its terms and the jurisdiction relevant to the customer. A brand name, company registration and gambling authorisation answer different questions.

For readers in the Republic of Ireland, the relevant question is the authority to provide the particular service here. A UKGC reference or an unspecified “EU licence” should not be treated as automatic Irish authorisation. GRAI opened applications for in-person betting, remote betting and remote betting intermediary licences on 9 February 2026. Opening applications did not mean that every applicant immediately held a licence. The transition and the application of obligations are phased; check the relevant licence, commencement provisions and current official guidance rather than assuming all duties began for every business on the same day.

What a licence and HTTPS do not prove

A licence is not a promise of profit, a guarantee that every dispute will be resolved in the customer’s favour or blanket insurance for account funds. A secure HTTPS connection protects data in transit; it does not certify the financial position, conduct or fairness of the business using it.

Read any statement about customer funds carefully. Do not infer deposit protection from a badge, a payment logo or the word “regulated”. This guide does not certify any individual operator.

Clarity should survive a difficult question

Useful terms explain the accepted price, settlement rules, verification requirements, withdrawal process, possible charges and how a complaint is handled. The information should remain understandable when a payment is delayed, a participant withdraws or an event is abandoned.

Separate what is promised from what is estimated. A stated processing time can exclude later bank processing. A maximum payment may concern a particular product or period. A vague phrase such as “fast withdrawals” is not a measurable commitment.

Controls should be understandable and findable

Look for clear explanations of account limits, breaks, exclusion and access to transaction history. Different controls do different jobs: a deposit restriction is not necessarily a limit on total stakes or losses. Their availability does not make gambling harmless.

GRAI describes blocking tools outside the betting interface, including software and bank blocks. Check the scope and limitations of each tool. No single control should be presented as complete protection.

Do not confuse regulation with dispute resolution

GRAI’s general-enquiries guidance states that individual customer disputes should be escalated with the operator; GRAI does not take responsibility for resolving those disputes. Preserve the relevant record, rule version and correspondence, and use the applicable complaints procedure.

That distinction does not mean GRAI has no complaints or enforcement role. Its remit includes licensing, supervision and enforcing relevant obligations. Complaints about alleged breaches of those obligations have a separate statutory route under section 180 of the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 and the 2026 Complaints Procedures Regulations. Regulatory scrutiny is not a promise that GRAI will adjudicate a private payout dispute or recover money for a customer.

This is a source-based consumer checklist, not a list of recommended betting businesses. If the evidence is missing, the honest result is “not verified”. Choosing not to use a service remains an option.

Sources & methodology

Numerical examples are hypothetical and their assumptions are stated. They explain mechanisms, not recommendations for a real wager. Settlement illustrations do not replace the terms of a specific product.
